Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know the business world has been overtaken by social media. Almost every top Fortune 500 CEO has a profile, and businesses all over the world are implementing it as part of their marketing strategy.

But there are a million sites out there. It is hard to keep track, much less decide which ones are right for your business.  For many business owners, it is a balance between use (how much time they spend) versus usefulness (how much response they see). Especially for small business owners, it can be difficult to justify spending long hours on social media. So what sites are business owners using?

LinkedIn tops other social networks as the most valuable tool to their company’s growth. They weren’t as impressed by Twitter or Facebook. In a survey by the Wall Street Journal and Vistage International, 41 percent said LinkedIn was the top choice in social media sites that could benefit their company. Facebook was second at 14 percent, and Twitter came in it at a measly three percent.

It can be difficult for business owners to see direct, traditional ROI on spending hours on developing their brand’s social media presence. They generally rely on factors such as page views, click-through rates, or number of interactions to measure social media. They seem to overwhelmingly favor LinkedIn as a preferred social site for their business (Facebook came in at second). Even more so that actual use, many business owners saw potential in LinkedIn as a growing future resource for their business.
