Orlando Boat Insurance: How to Prevent Boat Theft

The most important thing to remember when it comes to the risk of your boat being stolen is that thieves will typically strike where they find an easy opportunity. There are three basic principles to keep in mind to make the opportunity for theft more difficult; time, noise and visibility. By making it timely, noisy, or highly visible to steal your boat, you are significantly decreasing the chances of your vessel being stolen. Here is a list of precautions you can take to prevent boat theft.

Don’t leave your key in the ignition when the boat is not in use. Also, don’t leave your key on the boat or in an obvious location when the boat is unattended.

Secure your boat so it cannot be easily moved. If you’re storing it on land, install a high-quality trailer hitch lock. If you are storing it in the water use a cable and a padlock to secure the dinghy to the primary vessel.

Never leave your boat with a “For Sale” sign posted on it.

If your boat is kept at a marina, choose one with full-time security and good lighting. In addition, make sure that the marina staff is aware of when your boat is being used by you or an operator approved by you.

Install an anti-theft alarm and/or tracking system on your boat. Your local marine supplier should be able to recommend a quality model.

Remove all personal property from your vessel. This includes portable electronics and fishing equipment. If you can’t remove it, then at least stow your equipment where it’s out of sight and preferably in a locked storage location.

These are just a few of the precautions you can take to prevent boat theft. Other steps include storing it behind your house or on the side of your house if you keep it at home, replacing the spring-latch locking assembly with a deadbolt type lock to avoid entry into your boat’s cabin, and removing any important paperwork from the boat such as your registrations or document papers.
