Just how green is the Florida hospitality industry? According to a barrage of studies and articles, the hospitality industry is a huge participant in implementing sustainable practices.
A study found in the International Journal of Hospitality Management found that major chain hotels, including Hyatt, Marriott, Hilton and others were some of the top leaders in green and sustainable operations. Hospitality chains, in particular, were likely to use energy-efficient light bulbs, water-saving bathroom fixtures, and environmentally preferable cleaning products.
The changes are small, but expansive across the board. Linen reuse programs where guests can choose to use their towels and linens for a second night rather than replacing them to conserve water and energy are in effect in many hotels. Bathrooms host dual-flush toilets and low-flow showers to conserve water. Bins are provided in the room for recyclables. Natural lights and CFL bulbs save electricity.
Guests are supportive of hotels going green. Godwin-Charles Ogbeide, Assistant Professor of Hospitality Management, found in a study reported in newswise, that most consumers were inclined to stay at hotels that take steps to be environmentally sustainable. The top categories of concern to consumers were water, energy, and waste reduction.
However, they are only supportive to a point. While guests appreciate the efforts, they don’t want anything to interfere with basic comforts expected in a hotel room. Saving water is great, but not if it means having a weak spray from the shower head more reminiscent of gym locker rooms than an established hotel.
From a business standpoint, it can be costly initially to convert your hotel to greener practices. However, those changes will pay off in the future, potentially saving thousands in water and energy costs. Has your hotel establishment joined the green movement? We’d love to hear from you!
